Flexibility and facial recognition: the keys to securing a large sports complex (Brazil).

Flexibility and facial recognition: the keys to securing a large sports complex (Brazil).

Brazil’s most modern soccer stadium protects its facilities with a flexible solution based on facial recognition.

CHALLENGE

With a capacity of more than 40,000 people, this soccer stadium is one of the main stadiums in Brazil, and also has a training and education center for athletes, located 15 km from the stadium.

This project had two main objectives: to secure the infrastructures and to obtain valuable information about those attending the sporting events.

On the one hand, the end customer was looking for total protection of the stadium and the athlete training and education center. Specifically, they wanted to control tickets and automate access, but, above all, one of the main needs was to control fans who had been sanctioned and prevent their access to the stadium.

On the other hand, the marketing department of the sports club needed to to obtain information on fans and partners. In order to to increase profitability and profits, video surveillance systems were needed to provide data on locations and traffic frequencies in different areas, so that the system could be used to monitor the traffic in different areas. to be able to apply business intelligence.

With these two objectives in mind, the project was designed around one main purpose: the need for the selected system to be flexible and adaptable so that it could integrate previously installed video surveillance equipment and devices from various manufacturers.

reconocimiento-facial-estadio-scati

In this project, SCATI competed with four of the world’s leading manufacturers of video surveillance systems, and its facial recognition and license plate reading solution was finally chosen to protect this large installation. The SCATI solution, apart from being the most flexible of the systems proposed to expand the installation, is the one that obtained the best practical results in the tests carried out.

SOLUTION

The installed solution is composed of a series of differentiating elements, which make it unique and totally unique adapted to the needs of the end customer. Specifically, the video surveillance system consists of 300 cameras from different manufacturers, all centrally managed by the innovative video management platforms from SCATI.

In addition to managing existing cameras from other manufacturers, new cameras for facial recognition and license plate reading will be added to the project.

Thus, more than 30 SCATI facial recognition cameras (SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8) are installed at each of the 12 access points of the stadium and the training center, but also in other corridors, the stadium store and other key points.

cámara-videovigilancia-cctv-seguridad

The SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8 camera offers high resolution images under any lighting conditions. This is made possible by built-in infrared illumination up to 60 meters. Despite the large number of people in the stadium, these cameras are able to identify the different people attending the games or the training center. Thanks to the installation of this type of camera with analytics, the club can provide additional security for its visitors, athletes and employees: it is possible to identify troublemakers and prevent them from entering the stadium.

All this is possible thanks to the classification into authorized and unauthorized persons. Thanks to SCATI’s solution, up to 60 faces per second can be captured, identifying incoming fans as well as crowds.

When an unwanted person is identified, the system sends an automatic alarm with an associated image and video to the security officer. In the same way, they can locate any person or event in a matter of seconds in order to provide a rapid response to any eventuality, as well as collaborate with the authorities if necessary.

cctv-videovigilancia-cámara

On the other hand, in order to control vehicle access to the stadium and training center facilities, other cameras with analytics are installed: LPR (License Plate Recognition) reading cameras. Specifically, the SDLC-3511VR-XYM2-LPR model allows to monitor all vehicle entrances and exits to the facilities, as well as to automate them. In this way, when an authorized vehicle is about to enter through one of the entrances, the system automatically reads its license plate and allows it to enter, without the need for human intervention. This minimizes waiting time and increases visitor satisfaction, while saving on costs.

As mentioned above, in addition to these SCATI analytical cameras and other newly installed cameras for perimeter control, one of the main requirements of the project was the flexibility of the system. Since the end customer had a pre-existing system composed of elements from other manufacturers, the installed solution must allow centralized and flexible management of all the elements of the system. This includes both legacy and new servers and systems, with a total management of more than 300 cameras.

Managing this large number of diverse system elements is made possible by SCATI’s innovative video management platforms. These platforms are specifically designed for projects that require scalable and professional solutions. Specifically, the platform chosen in this project incorporates the latest Business Intelligence tools that facilitate decision making and, in addition, allows the management of the CCTV system from anywhere and at any time, either from a fixed or mobile device.

The information and images produced by the systems are stored locally through SCATI’s powerful recording servers installed at strategic points in the sports complex. Specifically, the recording servers chosen in this case were from the Kraken Series.

SCATI KRAKEN are recording platforms designed for large security projects, which require efficient management of hundreds of cameras (up to 256 each) with maximum reliability and availability. In addition, it has redundancy of its main hardware elements (storage, power supplies or network cards), to maximize uninterrupted operation in case of possible eventualities.

Toda esta instalación se gestiona desde el centro de control instalado en el estadio, donde el personal de seguridad puede visionar desde un videowall las imágenes y recibir avisos ante cualquier evento que pueda ocurrir.

BENEFITS

This soccer club is one of the most innovative in Latin America, with the most modern stadium in Brazil and one of the safest in the region.

With the installation of the advanced facial recognition and license plate reading system, visitors, athletes and workers can be identified, thus facilitating safe and fast access to key areas. Moreover, thanks to biometric face recognition of people in conflict, a safe and secure sporting experience is offered to everyone entering the stadium as well as the training and education center. With all this, the club’s marketing team has achieved its goal: to obtain valuable information about the attendees. With this data, they can increase your profitability, they allow them to know where visitors spend the most time, as well as what type of attendee profile visits stores and food and beverage outlets.

In addition, thanks to the flexibility and adaptability of SCATI’s systems, the end customer has been able to retain the pre-existing systems and manage them centrally.

SCATI, manufacturer of intelligent video solutions, completes its video surveillance proposal with the addition of a new line of ThermalScan cameras to protect large geographic areas or areas with irregular or undefined perimeters such as natural land and sea areas, critical infrastructures, etc.

ThermalScan cameras detect, recognize and track an unlimited number of targets (people, ships, vehicles, etc.) automatically, over long distances and in the most adverse weather conditions and in total darkness, providing high-resolution images.

A camera of these characteristics is capable of replacing hundreds of conventional cameras, simplifying and minimizing the installation and maintenance costs of the system.

thermalscan radar termico

Thanks to their high image capture speed (360º/2 sec.) and the use of advanced optical image stabilization technology, these cameras cover surfaces of several kilometers in distance without leaving blind spots, which facilitates the continuous monitoring of large distances and also minimizes false alarms due to the high data update frequency.

The range of SCATI ThermalScande cameras depends on the size of the lens or focal length, the resolution or its location. The shorter the focal length, the larger the field of view. The higher the resolution, the sharper the images will be. The fewer obstacles between the camera and the object of interest, the better the chances of capturing it in images.

For this reason, and depending on the distance of the area to be monitored, SCATI offers two ranges of cameras with different optics.

Mini Range

gama mini thermal scan radar termico

The Mini range of thermal radar cameras is ideal for monitoring areas up to 1.5 km away: perimeter around the airport, prison, etc.

Periscope Range

The Periscope Range is most suitable in wide area scenarios such as border and coastal surveillance where the objects of interest are at greater distances.

For the protection of the areas closest to the premises to be protected, the thermal radar cameras can have associated SCATI EYE PTZ Domes, with images already in the visible spectrum, which will automatically position themselves at those points where the intrusion is detected, with the aim of being able to identify the object or person that generated the alert.
These cameras meet the most demanding needs and have multiple applications:

  • Border protection: Maintaining territorial integrity, preventing illegal immigration, drug smuggling, etc.
  • Ports and Airports: External threat detection, fire detection, etc.
  • Coastal and maritime surveillance: infrastructure protection, detection of boardings of docked ships, drug smuggling or attacks.
  • Critical infrastructures and utilities: Full 24×7 protection
  • Nature reserves: Detection of intruders, poachers, illegal harvesting, fires.

Videorecorder NVR

Its design maximizes uninterrupted operation in the event of failures by implementing hardware redundancy in its components and RAID 5 storage configuration, making it ideal for mission-critical video surveillance operations.

As the recording needs are different in each project and in each customer, using cameras of higher or lower resolution, having to record for longer or shorter periods of time, continuously or by events, all SCATI VISION recorders allow configurable storage with disks specifically manufactured for use in video surveillance. In addition, they are part of a fully scalable solution and are designed to work with any ONVIF camera.

The K series devices use H.265 compression algorithms, which allows the images to be stored in less storage (up to 40% less compared to other manufacturers using H.264) and the transmission of images over the network can be done in a much lighter and smoother way.

Like all VISION SUITE video recorders, the K series incorporates functionalities that allow continuous monitoring of their health and operation and, in the event that a failure is detected, to notify technical alarms; and they are also capable of simultaneously serving multiple clients and limiting the transmission of information according to the available bandwidth.

Recommendations to protect your cameras against cyber-attacks

Recommendations to protect your cameras against cyber-attacks

Cyber-Security for IP cameras

Any device connected to the network, like IP cameras, has the risk of being cyber-attacked. Are your cameras really protected against cyber-attacks?

The following article include numerous recommendations that will help you strengthen the environment and protect your IP cameras against possible Internet threats.

1. Limiting access to the Network

The first step to protect your cameras is to protect the network they are connected to. For that purpose, the most effective and usual procedure is to place the recorders and cameras in a network isolated from the corporate network physically or virtually.

2. Authentication

SECURE PASSWORDS

The password is the second main protection measure when one camera is installed and connected to the network.

It is recommended to set a strong password containing at least 8 characters including uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. (Find out the 5 key points to create a secure password)

BLOCKING IMPROPER ACCESS

Illegal login blocking is used to limit the number of the user’s login attempts. If the maximum number of attempts is exceeded, the IP address can be blocked for a period of time.

DIGEST AUTHENTICATION

RTSP and WEB authentication support the “digest” mode. This authentication method prevents web customers from sending the access passwords in plain through the network.

PERMIT MANAGER

It is recommended to have a permit manager with different access levels or users’ groups (roles) so that everyone can access the minimum essential information to develop their work.

3. Encrypting

Based on SSL/TLS and HTTP, the HTTPS protocol encrypts traffic between the customer and the camera improving the web access security.

We recommend you using a certificate signed by a CA (Public or private Certified Authority), although it means an additional cost, to reduce the risk an attacking system makes itself out to be a camera. A self-signed certificate is suitable for providing encrypting, but web customers will notice that it is an untrusted certificate.

4. Ports and Services

To minimise the possibility of attacks and reduce security risks you will only need to enable the ports and services needed for their environment.

SNMP

If necessary, you can enable the SNMP function to recover the state of the camera, parameters and information related to the alarm, and manage the camera remotely when connected to the network.

UPNP

The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol is a network protocol allowing for the discovery and automatic connection between network devices, as it is an automatic communication protocol, it is recommendable to disable it whenever possible.

QOS

QoS (Service Quality) is a mechanism that prioritises network traffic for specific applications. It can help solve the network delay and congestion through configuring the priority of data transmissions.

LOG FILES

Useful to register operations carried out with the cameras. It will help you search.

From the point of view of security, it is important that the date and time are correct so that, for example, the log registers have the date with the correct information.

Remember to synchronise the camera clock with a local or public server of network time protocol (NTP).

USERS’ AUDIT

Register of every connected user and IP.

AUTHORISED CUSTOMERS

Enabling IP filtering only for authorised customers will avoid the camera responding to the network traffic of other customers. It allows generation of white/blacklists for IP, to which access can be allowed or denied.
