Flexibility and facial recognition: the keys to securing a large sports complex (Brazil).

Feb 15, 2024

Brazil’s most modern soccer stadium protects its facilities with a flexible solution based on facial recognition.

CHALLENGE

With a capacity of more than 40,000 people, this soccer stadium is one of the main stadiums in Brazil, and also has a training and education center for athletes, located 15 km from the stadium.

This project had two main objectives: to secure the infrastructures and to obtain valuable information about those attending the sporting events.

On the one hand, the end customer was looking for total protection of the stadium and the athlete training and education center. Specifically, they wanted to control tickets and automate access, but, above all, one of the main needs was to control fans who had been sanctioned and prevent their access to the stadium.

On the other hand, the marketing department of the sports club needed to to obtain information on fans and partners. In order to to increase profitability and profits, video surveillance systems were needed to provide data on locations and traffic frequencies in different areas, so that the system could be used to monitor the traffic in different areas. to be able to apply business intelligence.

With these two objectives in mind, the project was designed around one main purpose: the need for the selected system to be flexible and adaptable so that it could integrate previously installed video surveillance equipment and devices from various manufacturers.

In this project, SCATI competed with four of the world’s leading manufacturers of video surveillance systems, and its facial recognition and license plate reading solution was finally chosen to protect this large installation. The SCATI solution, apart from being the most flexible of the systems proposed to expand the installation, is the one that obtained the best practical results in the tests carried out.

SOLUTION

The installed solution is composed of a series of differentiating elements, which make it unique and totally unique adapted to the needs of the end customer. Specifically, the video surveillance system consists of 300 cameras from different manufacturers, all centrally managed by the innovative video management platforms from SCATI.

In addition to managing existing cameras from other manufacturers, new cameras for facial recognition and license plate reading will be added to the project.

Thus, more than 30 SCATI facial recognition cameras (SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8) are installed at each of the 12 access points of the stadium and the training center, but also in other corridors, the stadium store and other key points.

The SDLI-3601VR-EMXA8 camera offers high resolution images under any lighting conditions. This is made possible by built-in infrared illumination up to 60 meters. Despite the large number of people in the stadium, these cameras are able to identify the different people attending the games or the training center. Thanks to the installation of this type of camera with analytics, the club can provide additional security for its visitors, athletes and employees: it is possible to identify troublemakers and prevent them from entering the stadium.

All this is possible thanks to the classification into authorized and unauthorized persons. Thanks to SCATI’s solution, up to 60 faces per second can be captured, identifying incoming fans as well as crowds.

When an unwanted person is identified, the system sends an automatic alarm with an associated image and video to the security officer. In the same way, they can locate any person or event in a matter of seconds in order to provide a rapid response to any eventuality, as well as collaborate with the authorities if necessary.

On the other hand, in order to control vehicle access to the stadium and training center facilities, other cameras with analytics are installed: LPR (License Plate Recognition) reading cameras. Specifically, the SDLC-3511VR-XYM2-LPR model allows to monitor all vehicle entrances and exits to the facilities, as well as to automate them. In this way, when an authorized vehicle is about to enter through one of the entrances, the system automatically reads its license plate and allows it to enter, without the need for human intervention. This minimizes waiting time and increases visitor satisfaction, while saving on costs.

As mentioned above, in addition to these SCATI analytical cameras and other newly installed cameras for perimeter control, one of the main requirements of the project was the flexibility of the system. Since the end customer had a pre-existing system composed of elements from other manufacturers, the installed solution must allow centralized and flexible management of all the elements of the system. This includes both legacy and new servers and systems, with a total management of more than 300 cameras.

Managing this large number of diverse system elements is made possible by SCATI’s innovative video management platforms. These platforms are specifically designed for projects that require scalable and professional solutions. Specifically, the platform chosen in this project incorporates the latest Business Intelligence tools that facilitate decision making and, in addition, allows the management of the CCTV system from anywhere and at any time, either from a fixed or mobile device.

The information and images produced by the systems are stored locally through SCATI’s powerful recording servers installed at strategic points in the sports complex. Specifically, the recording servers chosen in this case were from the Kraken Series.

SCATI KRAKEN are recording platforms designed for large security projects, which require efficient management of hundreds of cameras (up to 256 each) with maximum reliability and availability. In addition, it has redundancy of its main hardware elements (storage, power supplies or network cards), to maximize uninterrupted operation in case of possible eventualities.

Toda esta instalación se gestiona desde el centro de control instalado en el estadio, donde el personal de seguridad puede visionar desde un videowall las imágenes y recibir avisos ante cualquier evento que pueda ocurrir.

BENEFITS

This soccer club is one of the most innovative in Latin America, with the most modern stadium in Brazil and one of the safest in the region.

With the installation of the advanced facial recognition and license plate reading system, visitors, athletes and workers can be identified, thus facilitating safe and fast access to key areas. Moreover, thanks to biometric face recognition of people in conflict, a safe and secure sporting experience is offered to everyone entering the stadium as well as the training and education center. With all this, the club’s marketing team has achieved its goal: to obtain valuable information about the attendees. With this data, they can increase your profitability, they allow them to know where visitors spend the most time, as well as what type of attendee profile visits stores and food and beverage outlets.

In addition, thanks to the flexibility and adaptability of SCATI’s systems, the end customer has been able to retain the pre-existing systems and manage them centrally.

SCATI’s innovative facial recognition systems installed for one of Brazil’s most important soccer clubs once again puts its technology at the forefront and enables the club to offer a safe and secure sporting experience”,

says Fabio Fara, SCATI’s KAM in Brazil.

SCATI is a company specialized in tailoring its solutions developed to customers’ needs. Thanks to the great adaptability of SCATI’s systems, it has been possible to offer a solution that fully meets the needs of this great soccer club.
